David Hunter

During the Glory Days of Rock ‘n’ Roll Radio, I was mowing the lawn at 395 College Street (The WDOT Studios).   At 14  years old in 1974, I was employed by Papa!   William A. Hunter,  President Of Hunter Broadcasting.
I’m proud of what he accomplished over the years with his work hard, play hard attitude. Oh Yea!  I also got to play Rock ‘n’ Roll on the radio! I couldn’t believe the jingle singers were on tape. Or, what we called a cart in those days. If you were good, you were called a cart-slapper.
I engineered for R.J. Potter, Big John Hill, Ken Barlow (in the nighttime) when he was on at a Disco called Arthur’s. Finally, at the age of 16, in 1976 I got my shot! THE DAVID HUNTER SHOW! My voice had not fully changed. So I squeaked. I started on the same weekend as two others: Rob Poulin and Rod Hill.
In 1983, I was 23 and I wanted to see if I was good enough to make it on my own without my father being the boss. I called a former DJ who had just bought a radio station in Poultney, Vermont. WVNR 1340 AM was owned by Ken Barlow. He let me loose. Now I was doing remote broadcast and I got my first taste of being an account executive.
I moved on to tWMVQ in the Albany area. They gave me a car with a gas card.
I was in sales, but longed to be on the air again.
Then, in 1985, WDOT was 25 years old and had become the Country Giant. Here, I entered my “Desperado Dave” days.
Then I moved into live karaoke and went back to 1390 WKDR to help Louie, Jim and Mark. The station was sold to Radio Vermont and I stayed until coming over to Hegeman Avenue where I am today.
And now, THE LEGEND HAS RETURNED – to 96.7 DOT FM!!!!
“HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN!!” …..THIS TIME IN STEREO!!!!!!!!!
